FULL TIME POSITION: Remote
Position Summary
FLS seeks a highly skilled appellate attorney to provide specialized legal representation to survivors of domestic violence in appeals and post-judgment matters involving Injunctions for Protection (IPFs). This position will focus exclusively on representing victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking in appellate proceedings and related post-judgment advocacy. The appellate attorney will ensure continuity of representation for survivors navigating Florida’s complex appellate system, where procedural barriers frequently result in the loss of life-saving protections.
The attorney will provide direct representation and support the FLS Survivor Advocacy Project team with other duties as assigned. The attorney will work remotely within Florida, with travel for clinics, outreach events, and conferences. FLS has offices in Orlando and Newberry.
Essential Job Functions
Provide direct appellate representation to survivors in cases involving the denial, modification, dissolution, or defense of Injunctions for Protection
Review trial court records to identify legal and procedural errors affecting survivor protections
Assess the viability of appeals and responses to appeals filed by opposing parties
Prepare and file all appellate pleadings, including notices of appeal, motions, briefs, and supporting documents, in compliance with the Florida Rules of Appellate Procedure
Conduct advanced legal research and analysis related to domestic violence law, evidentiary issues, jurisdictional defects, standards of review, and statutory interpretation
Compile and manage appellate records and coordinate with trial-level counsel as appropriate
Present oral argument before Florida’s District Courts of Appeal when required
Advise survivors on post-judgment legal options, including rehearing, clarification, enforcement, modification, or appeal, and guide them through strict procedural deadlines
Communicate complex legal concepts to clients in a clear, professional, and trauma-informed manner
Provide training and technical assistance to injunction-for-protection and legal aid attorneys statewide on appellate-related issues in domestic violence cases
Educate practitioners on preserving the record at the trial level, identifying appealable issues, and avoiding common procedural errors that undermine survivor protections
Support consistent and effective application of domestic violence laws across Florida by strengthening appellate readiness among trial-level advocates
Maintain an active caseload of clients, including direct representation in a range of civil legal and civil rights issues
Supervise a paralegal who supports outreach, client interviews and intakes, maintains electronic case files, and assists domestic violence survivors
Review evidence and analyze potential claims, including fact investigation and legal research
Draft legal motions, briefs, memoranda, and other documents
Advocate directly with administrative agencies, courts, and opposing parties on behalf of domestic violence survivors
Monitor and track cases using the LegalServer case management system
Work with supervisors, grant managers, and administrative staff to ensure compliance with grant terms and conditions
Maintain contemporaneous timekeeping and detailed case records for grant reporting
Advise, assist, train, and mentor pro bono volunteer attorneys
Collaborate with community-based organizations and other allies to support advocacy and outreach goals
Attend trainings, seminars, and professional meetings, and represent FLS at authorized events
Work closely with the FLS Survivor Advocacy Project Director and other team members on all programmatic matters
Respond to requests for legal assistance from domestic violence survivors and related community members
Education and Qualifications
Juris Doctor degree
Admission to The Florida Bar
Minimum of three (3) years of experience practicing law, with preference for substantial experience in Florida appellate practice, including briefing and motion practice
Demonstrated knowledge of domestic violence law, particularly Injunctions for Protection under Chapter 741, Florida Statutes
Experience handling domestic violence injunction hearings or appeals, with familiarity with evidentiary issues, credibility determinations, and common trial court errors
Excellent research and writing skills
Strong organizational skills and sound strategic judgment regarding deadlines and appellate remedies
Ability to provide trauma-informed, survivor-centered legal representation
Commitment to using a trauma-informed approach when working with vulnerable populations
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent and consistent attention to detail and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
Strong written and verbal communication, organizational, and time management skills

This position will provide direct civil legal services to survivors, with a primary focus on injunctions for protection and related family law matters, while also addressing the interconnected legal needs that frequently arise from domestic violence, including housing, consumer, and public benefits issues. The attorney will work closely with community partners to deliver trauma-informed, survivor-centered legal assistance in multiple locations, including rural and underserved communities.

Essential Job Functions

This position plays a vital role in securing funding that enables us to serve clients facing housing insecurity, domestic violence, consumer fraud, public benefits issues, and other critical civil legal needs.
Key Responsibilities
Grant Prospecting & Research:
Identify, research, and evaluate new funding opportunities from foundations, corporations, state agencies, and federal agencies.
Proactively analyze eligibility requirements, funding trends, and diversification opportunities.
Stay up to date on state and federal policies that may impact funding priorities.
Conduct background research to strengthen proposals and inform project design.
Grant Writing & Submission:
Draft, prepare, and submit high-quality grant applications, concept papers, letters of inquiry, and supporting documents.
Develop proposals by assembling information regarding project objectives, outcomes, deliverables, implementation methods, timetables, staffing, budgets, performance standards, and evaluation strategies.
Establish proposal timelines, priorities, and internal deadlines for information-gathering, writing, review, approval, and submission.
Determine proposal concepts by studying RFPs, clarifying organizational opportunities/needs, and participating in strategy meetings.
Maintain quality standards in all written materials, including readability, consistency, tone, and use of templates.
Write, revise, and edit drafts including executive summaries, organization background sections, and conclusions.
Budget Development:
Develop and refine grant budgets in collaboration with program and finance staff.
Ensure alignment between narrative components and budget documents.
Collaboration & Internal Coordination:
Work with program and administrative staff throughout the state to determine service needs, project ideas, gaps in services, and program expansion opportunities.
Collaborate with program teams to articulate goals, outcomes, and evaluation metrics.
Facilitate information gathering for proposals and reporting.
Participate in development and program meetings as needed.
Reporting, Stewardship & Funder Relations:Assist in preparation and submission of timely and accurate progress reports to funders.
Gather and synthesize data, outcomes, and stories to support reporting requirements.

Correspond with private funders regarding proposal development and project updates.

Qualifications:
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or relevant certification preferred.

Experience developing and reviewing grant budgets.

Florida Legal Services (FLS) seeks a dynamic attorney with vision, initiative, and a demonstrated commitment to public interest law to fill a full-time attorney position. The FLS Survivor Advocacy Project serves victims of crimes including Domestic Violence, Intimate Partner Violence, and Human Trafficking. Our Project attorneys and paralegals operate a Statewide Domestic Violence Hotline that serves as a primary source of client intakes. We provide extended services to clients through our Holistic Survivor Services and Human Trafficking projects. Our advocacy is supported by the Florida Department of Children and Families, the Florida Attorney General through Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) grants, and Funding Florida Legal Aid which provides IOTA grants. The Survivor Advocacy Attorney will primarily provide direct legal assistance to survivors of domestic violence through the hotline. The position will also include the opportunity to provide more extended direct services to survivors and to advocate for systemic change to ensure that eligible survivors can obtain fair and uniform access to services. This will be predominantly a remote position, but requires physical presence in Florida and the ability to travel within the state on occasion.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide statewide legal assistance by telephone to survivors of domestic violence on various civil legal needs;
Provide training to other DV advocates on a range of civil legal issues affecting survivors of DV;
Refer clients for appropriate extended services, both within and outside of the organization;
Identify and conduct advocacy on systemic issues impacting survivors of DV;
Assist with building and maintaining relationships with outside referral agencies and organizations;
Any other duties as assigned by the attorney’s supervisor.
Job Qualifications:
Attorney in good standing with The Florida Bar;
Demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and economic justice;
Previous experience working with DV survivors and trauma-informed advocacy;
Previous experience in one or more substantive areas including: family law, immigration, injunctions, housing, victim rights enforcement, public benefits or health access;
An understanding of the dynamics of domestic and intimate partner violence;
An understanding of root causes of violence against women and oppressed groups is preferred;
Fluency in Spanish both oral and written strongly preferred;
