Some headlines from the weekend
With a possible foreclosure in the offing, sometimes the hardest part is the wait for the process server, a columnist for the Herald-Tribune says.
“I know I’m going to be foreclosed upon,” this caller said, adding that she hasn’t paid her mortgage since last summer. The bank agreed to sell the house in a short sale, but no buyer came forth….
But this woman cannot afford an attorney to answer a lawsuit. “There are legal-service organizations that provide pro bono services to people in her situation,” said Wiseman. “She might want to get on the Internet or look through the Yellow Pages. (One is Legal Aid of Manasota, 366-0038).
Now we know why those phones are ring off the hook in our offices. Of course, if I was the columnist, I would also recommend the Florida Attorneys Saving Homes resource — which you might consider doing as well when you have clients in pre-foreclosure.
Meanwhile, some of our most vulnerable clients are at severe risk in a broken mental health system. Tampa Bay Online is out with a horror story involving young people in such settings.
“Kids aren’t cogs on a wheel,” said Brian Cabrey, a Jacksonville lawyer and the vice president of Florida’s Children First, a child advocacy group. “You have to be seriously suspicious of any for-profit corporation. Despite the best of intentions, they frequently devolve into what we’re seeing at Tampa Bay Academy.”
Indeed.
