2008 Florida Bar Summer Fellows Trained & Ready For Duty

This summer, 38 law students from all 10 of Florida’s law schools and 5 out-of-state law schools are participating as the 2008 Florida Bar Foundation Summer Fellows.  The Fellows will work for 11 even weeks during the summer at Foundation-funded legal assistance programs in Florida.  This year the Foundation received 266 applications from first and second year (1L and 2L) law students for the 2008 Summer Fellowship program.

The 2008 Summer Fellows gathered in Ft. Lauderdale on May 15 – May 16, 2008 and received substantive law training from Legal Aid lawyers in the areas of: consumer law, immigration, public benefits, housing, family law, children’s issues, prisoners’ issues, and employment law.  The Fellows also learned the History of Legal Services and how to have successful careers as attorneys in Legal Aid/Legal Services programs.

The law students’ fellowships begin on May 19, 2008 and the Fellows will be working at 28 different Florida Bar Foundation-funded legal assistance programs including: Bay Area Legal Services, Florida Rural Legal Services, Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County, Florida Legal Services, and Southern Legal Counsel.

The purposes of the fellowship program are to: involve law students in the provision of civil legal assistance to the poor in critical areas of need; provide an in-depth educational experience in representing the poor and working with individual clients and client groups in civil matters; increase law student interest in and awareness of the legal problems of the poor and the challenges and satisfactions of representing the poor; and promote commitment to pro bono representation of the poor.
